  • Not designed for continuous occupancy, and
  • Have limited or restricted means for entry or exit.

These types of spaces are common in agricultural settings and each year, there are many deaths associated with working in confined spaces. Cal OSHA requires that companies with confined spaces write and implement written plans, train their employees on confined spaces operating and safety procedures.

Forklift Safety Certification and Training

The use of forklifts in most agricultural operations is necessary and their uses are very diverse.

Safety Training

Annual forklift safety training is required for all persons who use forklifts in agriculture. This includes those who use forklifts in typical agricultural operations.

Forklift Certification

It is the responsibility of each agricultural company to determine whether forklift safety certification is required for its operation. If the operation falls into Cal OSHA’s definition of “agricultural operation,” then formal forklift safety certification is not required. The definition of “agricultural operation” is defined in CCR Title 8, Section 3437 as follows:

“All operations necessary to farming in all of its branches, including maintenance of machinery or other facilities, and the planting, cultivation or growing, keeping for sale, harvesting, transporting on the farm or to the first place of processing, any tree, plant, animal, fowl, fish, insecti or products thereof.”

This being said, Cal OSHA and Federal OSHA strongly encourage all who use a forklift to be forklift safety certified, especially those who train others on safe forklift operation. The certification program consists of three components and must be performed at the site where the forklift is used. MVP Safety Professionals offers forklift certification for counter-balance, narrow aisle and pallet jack forklifts. The certifications are valid for three years.

In California, all people including owners who operate forklifts in an agricultural setting are required to have a forklift safety training prior to opertating a forklift at a company and then once annually thereafter.

MVP Safety Professionals provides both the certification and training programs:

  • Forklift Safety Training (required annually) – 30-45 minutes
  • Forklift Safety Certification (valid for 3 years)- 2-3 hours

Contact MVP for further clarification on the training and/or certification requirements.
